How we see the world depends on what we remember. How we narrate memories dictates how we act. The Planet Kigali dance performance reverses the perspective: six time-travelers from the future land in their past to explore our present. What traces has our time left in the future? The time travelers on stage look at the past, because in the post-identitarian society of the future, many of the current categorizations no longer play a role. The choreographer, Yolanda Gutiérrez, the dramatist, Jens Dietrich, and the director, Dorcy Rugamba, have been inspired by Rwandan arts and create images for a common future on spaceship Earth. In the five tableaux of the piece, classical Rwandan and contemporary dance merge, an inconspicuous marginal figure is transformed into a star, video snippets of the past flash like strobe lights, Rwandan beats are transmuted into body percussion, collective memories are shaped into sequences of movement and mythical cosmology meets sci-fi fantasies.
